Catherine from Dainty Dress Diaries has been doing a little DIY in her garden. She has created a garden wall shelf and planter out of an old chair she salvaged.
This is how she created these two quirky pieces.
The base was cut from the back of the chair using a jigsaw. (Don’t worry if you do not have a jigsaw as you can use a handsaw instead, just take care when using tools.) Once the chair was cut Catherine started working on the shelf part of this project. She had some scrap wood in the shed and cut it to size to use as the base of the shelf. Using a drill she added some metal brackets to the back to join the bottom piece of wood to the chair back. Catherine then gave it a light sanding and cleaned it down using a degreaser.
To make a planter Catherine used some garden fabric liner that she had left over from last year. You can pick this up in the garden centres and DIY shops. She sanded any rough edges on the base of the planter and cleaned down the wood. After painting, Catherine added the fabric to the chair by using a staple gun.
Some plants were added and it makes a stylish addition to a corner in Catherines Garden
For this project, Catherine used the Autentico Versante Matt in the shade “Blushed”. She has previously used this paint on her kitchen cupboards and PVC door and is a massive fan of how durable it is. You can also get it in eggshell if you prefer a slight sheen. The great thing about the Versante range is that it has a built-in sealer so there is no need to wax or varnish.
